It is popularly supposed that a greater prosperity for individuals or nations can only come through a political and social reconstruction. This cannot be true apart from the practice of the moral virtures in the individuals that comprise a nation. Better laws and social conditions will always follow a higher realization of morality among the individuals of a community, but no legal enactment can give prosperity to, nay it cannot prevent the ruin of, a man or a nation that has become lax and decadent in the pursuit and practice of virtue. The moral virtues are the foundation and support of prosperity as they are the soul of greatness. They endure forever, and all the works of man which endure are built upon them. Without them there is neither strength, stability, nor substantial reality, but only ephemeral dreams. To find moral principles is to have found prosperity, greatness, truth, and is therefore to be strong, valiant, joyful and free.

Es muy común suponer que la prosperidad de los individuos y las naciones sólo puede venir por medio de la reconstrucción política y social. Esto no puede ser verdad aparte de la práctica de las virtudes morales de los individuos que componen una nación. Mejores leyes y condiciones sociales siempre vienen después de la realización aumentada de las buenas morales entre los individuos de la comunidad, pero ninguna sanción legal puede dar prosperidad a, ni tampoco puede prevenir la ruina de, un hombre o una nación que se ha vuelto indisciplinada y decadente en la búsqueda y práctica de la virtud. Las virtudes morales son tanto la fundación y el pilar de la prosperidad como el alma de la grandeza. Sin éstas, no hay ni fuerza, ni estabilidad, ni realidad sustancial, sino solamente sueños efímeros. Encontrar principios morales es encontrar prosperidad, grandeza, verdad y por consiguiente fortaleza, valentía, alegría y libertad.
