Description

Elbert Hubbard’s A Message to Garcia (1899) is a short but powerful essay that emphasizes individual initiative, responsibility, and perseverance. The piece was inspired by the real-life mission of U.S. Army Lieutenant Andrew Rowan, who was tasked with delivering a crucial message to General Calixto García, a Cuban insurgent leader, during the Spanish-American War. Without hesitation, Rowan took the assignment, navigated dangerous terrain, and successfully completed his mission—without asking unnecessary questions or requiring supervision.
